What is Reality?

What do Plato, Buddha, and Quantum Physics all have in common? **Their depiction of reality.**

Aristotle, Einstein, and many others held opposite views.

Why Do We Care?

To maximize wellness and tap into your true potential, you will want to understand what reality is. Once you have this understanding you will have a far greater chance to tap powers for healing and living that are beyond anything you imagined.

The Quick Answer

Plato was correct – we are just shadows on a wall (remember Plato's allegory of the cave?). In modern terms, we would say that reality is non-local.

Plato and Aristotle

We start with these two, as the argument of whether reality is local (physical) or non-local (something 'beyond') has one of its greatest conflicts at this point in history.

Plato believed that reality was non-local, and his famous 'Allegory of the Cave' explains it beautifully. In summary, we are merely shadows on the wall, cast by a deeper hidden reality.

Aristotle , Plato's student, believed that reality was ultimately local – the only reality is the one we experience with our senses. Sadly, his philosophy ended up being the predominant Western perspective, perpetuated over centuries by great men such as Newton, Descartes, Einstein, and countless others.

Interestingly, the Eastern perspective lines up perfectly with Plato. Buddha, Lao Tsu, and the vast majority of Eastern thinkers describe a holistic, non-local view of reality. As does quantum physics...

Quantum Physics: Copenhagen Interpretation

After thousands of years of science supporting Aristotle, Quantum Physics swung the argument back into Plato's favor. In a very big way.

Bohr, Heisenberg, Planck, and the greatest minds of the day turned to Eastern philosophy to help them grasp the implications of their own work. "Buddha was right," as many of them said.

The mathematics and experimental results only made sense when accepting that reality was non-local. Plato was correct.

Anyone who is not shocked by quantum theory has not understood it.

— Niels Bohr

Want to understand what those great minds thought? Don't read textbooks on quantum physics; read what the physicists said. Read Heisenberg's 'Physics and Philosophy' and Max Planck's books and essays.

Einstein's Perspective

Einstein hated quantum physics. His work (arguably) completed our understanding of the physical world – the local reality. While profound, he was still a champion of the Aristotelian, Western, deterministic world view.

Einstein and Bohr

Niels Bohr was right. For decades he and Einstein debated. As time went on, science showed that Niels Bohr, the father of Quantum Physics, was correct every single time.

Einstein spent most of his life trying to prove quantum physics wrong. He devised many great thought experiments and fought with Niels Bohr constantly. In the end, Einstein was proven wrong every time.

The EPR Paradox

The most famous thought experiment postulated by Einstein, Podolsky, and Rosen in the 1930s. It took over 30 years before experiments could be done.

These proved quantum physics right, and Einstein wrong, leading to the proof of quantum entanglement , among other things.

Bell's Inequality

Bell's Inequality was the death knell of the 'Western' perspective. John Bell, refusing to accept the EPR implications, decided to prove quantum physics wrong by attacking the idea of reality directly.

Alain Aspect and others carried out experiments in 1974 and proved convincingly that reality is non-local. Bell's work had successfully done the opposite of what he intended.

This marked the end of thousands of years of philosophical debate. Forty years later, there is still no question about this, as many others have carried out the experiments.

Bose-Einstein Condensate (BEC)

When a BEC was actually produced for the first time in 1995 – seventy years after the theory – it was a monumental achievement. Einstein and Bose worked out the mathematics but never expected to see what should have been obvious.

They completely ignored the most spectacular result of their work because they did not fully embrace the implications of quantum physics and non-local reality.

The Takeaway

Quantum physics, and the reality that it depicts, offers far more hope and a better understanding of the human condition. God, spirit, heaven, the soul… whatever religion or faith you hold… as long as you believe there is something greater beyond this local four-dimensional space-time universe… you are in agreement with Quantum Physics.
